The 7th Board of Trustees Meeting of Türkiye-Azerbaijan University was held in Baku, hosted by the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan.

Speaking at the opening session, President of the Council of Higher Education Erol Özvar stated that Türkiye-Azerbaijan University was established through the joint initiative, strong commitment, and leadership of the Presidents of Türkiye and Azerbaijan. He described the university as a historic and strategic milestone that crowns the deep-rooted ties between the two brotherly countries in the field of higher education.

Özvar noted that the university has successfully completed its establishment phase and is steadily evolving into an increasingly strong higher education institution.

Recalling that important decisions were taken at the 6th Board of Trustees Meeting, held last March, to strengthen the university’s academic quality, long-term vision, and sustainable growth strategy, Özvar said that students continue to achieve high grade point averages, scholarship systems have been harmonized, and efforts to strengthen the local academic staff are ongoing.

He added that, under the 2030 Development Strategy, discussions have focused not only on opening new academic programs but also on selecting a site for the university’s dedicated campus and developing cooperation with Karabakh University. The purpose of the 7th Board of Trustees Meeting, he noted, was to review the implementation of these decisions and determine the next steps that will shape the university’s future.

- A larger campus

Speaking to reporters, Özvar announced that the university plans to admit approximately 180 new students this year.

He stated that, beginning with the new academic year, work on the university’s new campus is expected to commence at the initiative of the Azerbaijani side, enabling Türkiye–Azerbaijan University to continue its activities on a significantly larger campus.

Özvar noted that one of the meeting’s principal agenda items was the introduction of new academic programs. He said that they aim to expand the number of programs offered and further strengthen the university’s academic infrastructure.

Emphasizing that Türkiye-Azerbaijan University was designed not only to serve Azerbaijani students but also students from across the region, Özvar expressed his satisfaction with the strong interest shown by Azerbaijani students in the programs offered by the university’s three partner institutions in Türkiye.

He stated that the university’s growth potential for the 2026-2030 period will be evaluated and that a four-to-five-year growth plan is expected to be adopted. With the completion of the new campus, he added, the university’s educational capacity will expand significantly.

Özvar also emphasized that the university aims to bring together the research capacity of its partner universities in Türkiye with Azerbaijani scholars under the umbrella of Türkiye-Azerbaijan University. In the future, he said, the institution will evolve beyond being solely a teaching university and become a joint research center that combines the scientific research capabilities of both countries.

- Scholarships for graduate education

Özvar announced that work is underway to establish master’s and doctoral scholarship programs for high-achieving Azerbaijani students. He also noted that a project aimed at training the university’s own future academic staff is among the institution’s priorities.

Emphasizing their goal of bringing together the higher education expertise and scientific research capacities of both Türkiye and Azerbaijan under the umbrella of Türkiye-Azerbaijan University, Özvar expressed his confidence that, through the shared commitment of both countries and the strong support of the partner universities, the institution will continue to develop into a model university for the Turkic world. Prior to the meeting, Özvar also held talks with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Science and Education, Emin Amrullayev.
