Number of Accredited Programs Increasing in Turkish Higher Education

Türkiye is an important country in the world in the field of higher
education with 208 universities, 185 thousand academics and more than 7
million students, 350 thousand of whom are international students. The
Council of Higher Education continues its efforts to maximize quality along
with the increase in capacity.
While the number of accredited programs in Türkiye is increasing day by
day, according to the 2024 University Monitoring and Evaluation General
Report, the number of universities with at least one accredited
undergraduate program in the 2023 YKS Guide was 116. The total number of
accredited programs was 1209. 42 universities have 10 or more accredited
undergraduate programs. Looking by years, while the average number of
accredited undergraduate programs of universities was 6.89 percent in 2018,
it reached 10.42 in 2023. This rate was 9.46 in 2022.
The university with the highest number of accredited undergraduate programs
in Türkiye was Istanbul Gelisim University with 56 programs, followed by
Sakarya University with 55 programs and Hacettepe University with 42
programs. Atatürk University ranked fourth with 41 programs, Ege University
ranked fifth with 39 programs, Erciyes University ranked sixth with 35
programs, Istanbul Technical University ranked seventh with 34 programs,
Başkent University ranked eighth with 33 programs, Yıldız Technical
University ranked ninth with 31 programs and Istanbul Medipol University
ranked 10th with 29 programs.
Erol Özvar, President of the Council of Higher Education, said that
accreditation is now required for new doctoral programs and emphasized that
the Council of Higher Education will continue its efforts to place its
quality-oriented approach at the center of the higher education system
while continuing to increase capacity in the coming period.
