CoHE President Erol Özvar Attends Sabri Orman’s Memorial Event

June 17, 2022 / İstanbul

An event to remember Prof. Dr. Sabri Orman, who carried out important studies in economics and Islamic economics in Türkiye, was held.

Sabri Orman, who was also the teacher of CoHE President Erol Özvar, was commemorated on the second anniversary of his death with a panel organized by Istanbul Ticaret University and Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (İTO).

The panel titled "Understanding Sabri Orman: Following the World of Thoughts of a Philosopher" was attended by CoHE President Prof. Erol Özvar, İTO President Şekib Avdagiç, Istanbul Ticaret University Rector Prof. Yücel Oğurlu, academics and the relatives of Sabri Orman.

Speaking at the event held at the Sütlüce Campus of Istanbul Ticaret University, CoHE President Özvar stated that Sabri Orman was a very significant teacher in his field and said; "We have attained the positive behaviors in reshaping and improving ourselves from our teachers. People achieve morality and satisfaction only by living with the valuable and highly qualified people they are surrounded with. It is like filling water from a fountain. Teaching starts from here, and science follows it. Science is actually a state, and the state passes from the scholar to his student. If there is a valid science, it will pass as it is.”

“The Islamic Economic Project was a project to be presented to the world”

Özvar stated that Sabri Orman had the Islamic Economics Project in mind in the early 1980s and said, “It was one of the most important projects that he could proudly present to the Islamic world from Türkiye. This agenda from the 1980s can be easily transferred and presented to the world as an exciting project even today. Sabri Orman built some of the most important pillars of this project, and young academics will continue the project.”

“When we were students in the early 1980s, there was a limited number of works concerning Islamic economics and the question of what economics is in Islam,” Özvar said and continued: “It is assumed that Islamic economics emerged with the dollar crisis in the 1970s. The project put forward by Sabri Orman argues that it did not arise due to the dollar crisis. He said that the foundation of the field of Islamic economics is actually based on the first Islamic sources and that we could trace the Islamic economy back to the time of the prophet. He had designed an intellectual space instead of technical solutions for the Islamic economy.”

“We are ready to support the Islamic Economic Project”

Özvar underlined that they could all think and act together about how the Islamic Economic Project would continue and stated that this project was a significant project in the formation of economic thought in the Islamic world. He added that CoHE wanted to give all kinds of support to universities that were willing to carry out the project.

The book titled "Understanding Sabri Orman" was also introduced in the event.
