May 13, 2020

CoHE President Prof. Yekta Saraç announced that Istanbul Mineral Exporters’ Association (IMEA) would grant non-refundable scholarships at the net minimum wage level to students and facilitate their employment on the condition that they make into the first 50 thousand in the university entrance exam and choose mining, geological and mineral processing engineering starting from the 2020-2021 academic year.

An online signing ceremony was held for the signing of the cooperation protocol between CoHE and IMEA. Mustafa Varank, Minister of Industry and Technology, Prof. Yekta Saraç, President of the Council of Higher Education, CoHE Executive Board members, İsmail Gülle, Chairman of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, Aydın Dinçer, Head of IMEA, and heads of the departments of mining, geological and mineral processing engineering attended the event.

Saraç said that the New CoHE had been in constant communication with the representatives of the sector to train people with a high level of competence according to the needs of the industry within the scope of the university-industry cooperation and to establish policies for their employment. He drew attention to the fact that the sector of mining is among the leading sectors in the economic development and international competitiveness of Turkey. He added that they came together with the representatives of the mining sector to train engineers with a high level of competence.

He shared the statistical data related to the programs of mining, geological and mineral processing engineering and noted that there were 4 thousand 198 students and 380 academic staff in 14 mining engineering programs; 5 thousand 311 students and 653 academic staff in 10 geological engineering programs and 299 students and 20 academic staff in the program of mineral processing engineering that is found only at one university.

He stated that the protocol signed with the representatives of the textile sector last year had fruitful results and that CoHE would sign the second protocol with the mining sector. He emphasized that the protocol aimed to attract successful students to the mining sector, to increase the number of internships and to provide employment to students after graduation. “As a result of this cooperation, IMEA will grant non-refundable scholarships as much as the monthly net minimum wage to the students who made into the top 50 thousand in the university entrance exam, picked one of these programs as one of their first five selections and got placed in the program. Those who are between 50 thousand and 65 thousand in the ranking will receive half of the net minimum wage as non-refundable scholarship and those who are ranked between 65 thousand and 80 thousand will get one-third of the net minimum wage as non-refundable scholarship. The amount of the scholarships, which will be offered starting from the 2020-2021 academic year, will be updated in accordance with the decision of the Mining Sector Board of the Turkish Exporters Assembly at the beginning of each year. Receiving scholarships from other institutions and organizations will not be an obstacle to receiving this scholarship”, Saraç said.

- The cooperation will help successful graduates get employed

Saraç underlined that the protocol signed between CoHE and IMEA also included topics regarding the employment of students who will successfully graduate from these programs. “IMEA will help scholarship holders, who have successfully graduated from the programs of mining, geology or mineral processing engineering, work in companies in the mining sector”, he said.

- Dinçer extended his thanks to CoHE

Dinçer thanked Mustafa Varank, Minister of Industry and Technology, for his support and participation in the signing ceremony, CoHE President Prof. Yekta Saraç and the relevant CoHE members for the cooperation that will contribute to the future of the mining sector in Turkey by attaching great importance to the cooperation between universities and industry within the framework of the goal of the New CoHE, and the heads of the departments of Mining, Geological and Mineral Processing Engineering for their contribution and participation in the meetings.
