Humanitarian Aid Experts Trained in Academia with Initiatives of CoHE

As a result of the collaborative work carried out by the Council of Higher
Education (CoHE) and Turkish Red Crescent, which has a history of 151 years
in humanitarian aid, master’s degree programs were started to be offered in
disaster and humanitarian aid management at Social Sciences University of
Ankara and Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University for the first time.
In this way, it is aimed to increase the contributions of Turkey, which has
become the largest donor country of humanitarian aid in the world, to
humanitarian assistance literature.
CoHE continues to open new programs to increase quality human resources in
priority fields and attaches importance to multidisciplinary programs with
faculty from different disciplines, where undergraduates from different
fields can apply, especially in the required fields.
In this scope, CoHE collaborated with Kızılay Academy for undergraduate
courses to be offered in humanitarian aid at Social Sciences University of
Ankara and Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University.
- Master’s programs opened in the fields of disaster and humanitarian
CoHE started to accept students to undergraduate programs carried out in
collaboration with Turkish Red Crescent starting from the fall term of the
2020-2021 academic year. A master’s program offered in Turkish and English
in disaster and humanitarian aid management was opened at Social Sciences
University of Ankara. Students showed great interest in the first call of
the programs that are offered in Turkish, English and as evening education
and 84 people applied to the programs.
Graduates from different programs such as social sciences, engineering and
medicine can apply to the program. Students enrolled in the master’s degree
program offered in English also have the opportunity to pursue their
doctoral studies in this field. In addition, a master’s program offered in
Turkish was opened in studies on humanitarian aid at Ankara Yıldırım
Beyazıt University within the scope of CoHE’s works.
Civil society workers also showed great interest in the programs. It was
observed that the students in programs without thesis in particular
enrolled in these programs to develop their professional skills.
- A huge contribution to make Turkey a model country in these fields in
the international arena
With the opening of the programs, it is planned to make the results and
impact analyzes of the humanitarian aid efforts of Turkey, which has become
the largest donor country of humanitarian aid in the world. It is also
planned to increase the contributions to be made by Turkey to the
humanitarian assistance literature in the world with the publications and
studies to be carried out in these fields. In addition, it is aimed to make
Turkey a model country in the international arena in the fields of cultural
diplomacy and disaster diplomacy with its academic background in
humanitarian aid and development policies.
- Members of Turkish Red Crescent also teach courses
The courses were initiated under the cooperation of Turkish Red Crescent
and universities. In this scope, members of Turkish Red Crescent also teach
courses and experts and managers with field experience participate in the
courses as speakers.
Efforts will also be made to ensure that the program coordinators are in
contact with each other and that the programs join the network of "European
Humanitarian Aid Master’s Programs". The Turkish Red Crescent will support
field studies on theses and graduation projects
