“The July 15 coup attempt is one of the most treacherous events in the political history of our country. The nation, the young and old alike, including students and academic staff, took it to the streets and averted the treacherous attempt.

The Council of Higher Education made a joint statement on July 16, 2016. In the statement, we condemned the coup attempt, which was conducted against the national will and would leave a black mark on the history of democracy. Turkish universities, the important defenders of democracy, banded together and reacted to the attempt to respect the national will and protect democracy.

After the July 15 coup attempt, both the universities and CoHE carried out various events, held meetings, sent information letters abroad, discussed the different aspects of the coup attempt on national and international platforms and published many articles. Turkish universities also established a harmonized cooperation with the related institutions and organizations of the State right after the atrocious coup attempt and showed great determination in taking the destructive elements that tried to take over the State out of the system as these elements would not be accepted by the academic and scientific life.

The Council of Higher Education and Turkish universities press on with fighting against the formation of all kinds of separatist and destructive terrorist organizations, notably FETÖ, in higher education institutions, as they had done before.

I keep all our citizens, who lost their lives during the resistance against the treacherous coup attempt under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on July 15, in our thoughts and prayers, and offer my heartfelt gratitude to our veterans. I hope that all our higher education institutions will raise generations that serve only our people and our State so that such treacherous organizations and initiatives will not be allowed to be formed again.”
