The July 15 coup attempt is one of the most treacherous events in the
political history of our country. The nation, the young and old alike, took
it to the streets and that these people averted the treacherous attempt.
Many people from various public institutions, including universities, lost
their lives and the institutions took measures against the FETO/PDY
The Council of Higher Education got in touch with the administrations of
all universities right after the atrocious coup attempt, establishing a
harmonized cooperation with the institutions and organizations of the
The Council of Higher Education made a statement on July 16, 2016. In the
statement, we condemned the coup attempt, which was conducted against the
national will and would leave a black mark on the history of democracy.
Turkish universities, the important defenders of democracy, banded together
and reacted to the attempt in order to respect the national will and to
The coup attempt was not supported by neither the society nor the military
and was a treacherous coup, which was organized by an organization that
infiltrated into all the segments of society for its own purposes. As a
matter of fact, the great Turkish nation banded together, stopped this
attempt and averted terror.
After the July 15 coup attempt, both the universities and CoHE carried out
various events, held meetings, sent information letters abroad, discussed
the various aspects of the coup attempt on national and international
platforms and published articles.
I am pleased to say that all of our universities have relayed the various
aspects of the coup process to the world through numerous meetings, panels,
art exhibitions, and national and international publications.
I hope that all our higher education institutions will raise generations
that serve our people and our state so that such treacherous organizations
and initiatives will not be allowed to be formed again.
