UNIVERSITY FEES RISE 60 PERCENT

It has been reported by the Anatolia news agency that the Higher Education Council (YOK) has decided to increase university fees by 60 percent next term.

According to a draft report prepared by the YOK for submittal to the Ministry of Education, fees for two and four year university programs will be between 12 million and 118 million TL in the 1999-2000 academic year.

The students of State conservatories and medical universities will pay the highest fee (118 million) while the students of Open Universities will pay the lowest fee (12 million).

Students' cost to the government 

According to the YOK, each medical school student costs the government approximately TL 3,190,000,000 per year. Students enrolled in dental and chemistry faculties cost around TL 1,160,000,000 per year, in engineering faculties it is around TL 470,000,000 per year, in science and literature faculties the cost is around TL 522,000,000 per year and in open universities it is around TL 22,000,000 per year. In state  conservatories the cost of a student is approximately TL 1,740,000,000 per year. 

Children of martyrs will not pay university fees

The YOK has decided, in accordance with the laws governing the Turkish Armed Forces and Anti-Terror Laws, that the children of martyrs will not pay university fees. After the draft report is examined by the Ministry of Education, the Cabinet will decide on the new fees.

How will the students pay the fees? 

The fees will be paid in two installments. The fırst installment will be paid during registration and the second will be paid in the second term.

VIRTUAL EDUCATION STARTING

Education through the internet which the Higher Education Council (YÖK) has been working on for a long time, will start in September. The students who study through the internet will pay secondary prices and the test results will be announced by e-mail. All courses will be given in Turkish. The programme will be supported by television, telephone and similar communication devices.
