Scholarship Like A Salary For Students Who Choose To Study In Fundamental And Earth Sciences At University
June 21, 2017
CoHE President Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç stated that CoHE would give scholarships worth of 625 Turkish liras per month for a year to all students placed in the top three in the fundamental and earth sciences programs starting from the 2017-2018 academic term.
He noted that they named the Council of Higher Education as the new CoHE because it had started to develop new and innovative programs.
President Saraç also stated that the new CoHE decided to grant scholarships to students placed in the top three in the undergraduate programs of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, which are of strategic importance for the priority fields and higher education in Turkey, in order to attract attention to these fields for the first time the previous year.
CoHE President said that CoHE started to grant scholarships to 630 students for 210 programs in 46 universities within the scope of the support program that was initiated in the 2016-2017 academic year.
Two more fields are added to the new support system
CoHE President Saraç said that Turkey would initiate two scholarship programs for the scientific life of Turkey in the 2017-2018 academic year.
He stated that the first one would be for earth sciences programs that are important for Turkey but have attracted fewer students in recent years and said:
"Earth sciences programs are programs that are considered as the components of fundamental sciences. There are currently 20 mining engineering, 25 geological engineering and 8 geophysical engineering programs in the Turkish higher education system. If we were to look at the demands of students, we can observe that the interest for these fields has decreased when the interest for fundamental sciences has decreased. When the enrolment rates of these programs was in the range of 39-50% in 2012, this ratio rose to 52-66% due to some decisions and rational plans carried out in 2016.
Earth sciences are as important as agriculture, forestry and fisheries programs for Turkey. We decided to launch a series of studies to raise the competency of students in these programs. Starting from this year, we will also grant scholarships to students placed in the top three in the earth sciences programs which are mining engineering, geological engineering and geophysical engineering."
Field of Fundamental Sciences
CoHE President Saraç underlined that the fundamental sciences programs are fields that constitute the basis of the scientific structure of all universities and said that TUBITAK gave scholarships to the first 25 students in the field of fundamental sciences on the request of CoHE.
President Saraç emphasized that an improvement in the field of fundamental sciences had become clearer when the program was combined with the regulations that promote the employment of graduates of fundamental sciences programs within the framework of the research reform package.
Saraç stated that CoHE had decided to grant scholarships for the field of fundamental sciences which is another important field for the scientific life of Turkey starting from the 2017-2018 academic term.
"We have decided to grant CoHE scholarships to all students who will be placed in the first three in the fields of fundamental sciences, namely physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, in Turkish state universities. Of course, the number of students will be quite high. This scholarship is for all students who are placed in the top three of the fundamental science programs in Turkish state universities. We believe that these incentives and supports in the field of basic sciences will make a significant contribution to the science-based development of Turkey."
"They could also receive scholarships from other institutions"
Regarding the CoHE scholarship that was initiated last year and in which earth and fundamental sciences were included this year, CoHE President said the following:
"When we combine the number of agriculture, forestry and fisheries programs that were included in the scholarship program that was initiated last year and the number of earth and fundamental sciences programs that will be included in the scholarship program this year, we see that there are currently 448 programs in Turkish state universities. 344 students that will be placed in the top three in 448 programs will benefit from this scholarship program."
CoHE President said that the amount of scholarships to be paid to these students will be 625 Turkish liras per month for this academic year. He also said that the scholarships will be paid for 12 months and that students who receive the CoHE scholarships could receive scholarships from other institutions.
