Workshop on Professional Development of Teachers Takes Place at CoHE

A workshop entitled "Effective Teacher Training for Quality in Education" was organized in order to discuss the current problems and solutions for the development of undergraduate programs of teaching institutions and the professional development of teachers at CoHE on October 20, 2017. The first meeting for the development of cooperation between universities/faculties and schools in teacher training and the professional development of teachers was held with the participation of the faculty members of various faculties of education was held at CoHE on October 6, 2017.
The second meeting was held under the chairmanship of CoHE Executive Board Member Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şişman at CoHE on October 20, 2017. It was organized in order to discuss and develop appropriate models that enable cooperation between universities/faculties and schools in teacher training, train more competent and well-equipped teachers, integrate theory and practice, and provide research-based continuing professional development. Faculty members from the faculties of education of Gazi University, Ankara University, Uludağ University, 9 Eylül University, Istanbul University, Marmara University, Çukurova University and Akdeniz University attended the meeting.
Updating Undergraduate Programs in Teacher Training
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şişman said that the Council of Higher Education made some changes such as setting 240,000 as the highest number of enrolled students, reducing the number of quotas gradually and closing evening education programs in order to train more qualified teachers in teacher training programs. He stated that they were working on updating the undergraduate programs initiated in line with the social needs and demands. He also stated that historical, social, cultural and ethical aspects of education were taken into consideration during the preparation of the new programs and that they were aiming to increase the awareness of teacher candidates in social, cultural and ethical issues through the new courses.
Models for Professional Development of Teachers
They discussed the ways and methods that can be used to create a national roadmap on professional development of teachers that is based on some topics brought to the agenda in the previous meeting. In addition, they talked about the objectives, goals and action plans for the development of the training system of teachers and professional development of teachers that are stated in the Teaching Strategy Document prepared by the Ministry of National Education.
Professional and School Development
The participants emphasized on the education of teachers for a more effective teacher training and the proposals for improvements that can be made within the scope of the cooperation among universities/faculties, directorates of national education and schools. They also placed emphasis on the models that will enable the faculties of education/educational sciences in particular to contribute more to the professional development of teachers and education directors and "school development".
In the new model, it is aimed to train more qualified and well-equipped teachers by enhancing the cooperation between teacher training institutions and schools, institutionalize the continuing professional development of teachers, offer training based on research and practice to teachers, integrate theory and practice and provide the support of experts/school counsellors during training.
Effective Teacher Training for Quality in Education
The report that will prepared according to the outcomes of the workshops is planned to be shared in the meeting, which will be held with the participation of the deans of faculties of education/educational sciences.
